Fire on the Dumpsite on New Year’s Day

Hello Everyone,

The girls who went last year to the Philippines have all been informed by Lynie over Facebook that there has been a fire in the Tondo area. She said:

“Friends in the Manila area – houses in Tondo burned down where some of our children live. They are left homeless on the first day of the year. Can anyone help by donating blankets, tarpaulins, clothes and food parcels? If you can help please contact PCF Ortigas office 6356913. Thank you very much.”

we have changed our status to say the same thing we are going to try and help if you can make any donations please do

Thanks from the girls =]

Bezza adds:-

I have spoken to staff at PCF’s office in the UK and they have told me that a fire started in one of the shanty houses on the Pier 18 dumpsite, on New Year’s Day. The fire quickly spread to eight other houses, and all nine houses were completely destroyed. None of the families affected have children who attend the PCF school.

The PCF Church in Tondo is endeavouring to help the families affected by this tragedy. Families who already have very little in terms of material possessions, now find themselves with only the clothes they stand up in, without even a roof over their heads, unable to cook and without bedding.

Our next container is not due to leave until April and will not reach Manila until June. Should you wish to offer support to these families, the most practical way to help is to make a financial donation directly to the Philippine Community Fund, marked “PCF Church- New Year’s Day Fire Appeal”.

The 2012 Team

The student team for 2012 is now complete. Ten of the Year 11 students from The Sholing Technology College were successful in their applications and will be returning to the Philippines in 2012.

The College completed the interviews of the Year 9 applicants last week, and seventeen boys and girls were successful. For them, it will be their first visit to Manila.

Congratulations to everyone in coming through the interview process with flying colours.

Early in the New Year the fundraising begins. All the staff and students must first raise £650 of personal sponsorship to cover the cost of their airfare . To help with this, there will once again be a 50km two day Sponsored Walk across the New Forest in June. Many of the team have already come up with their own ingenious ideas for raising funds

In addition to personal fundraising, everyone must also help to raise the equivalent of £400 per person to cover the cost of food, accommodation and transport in Manila, and also the cost of funding our projects whilst we are in the Philippines. To raise group funds we will arrange a number of fundraising events and these include:-

Fundraiser at the Hampshire Rosebowl in April.

Fashion Show at TSTC in the Autumn term supported by Wella UK.

Grand Christmas Draw in December 2011

Bag packing at a local supermarket.

The dates for the trip to the Philippines are Friday 3rd February to Saturday 18th February 2012 (half term is Monday 13th to Friday 17th February 2012).

The container school is open!

We were very pleased to hear that the new school is now open, providing education for over a thousand children from the rubbish dump in modern, light and airy facilities. The Guardian reported on the opening of the new school and what it will mean to those that use it, see the link below

The beginning of a new adventure

Hello everyone!
Today the 15 girls at TSTC had their interviews to see if they were lucky enough to get a place on the 2012 trip. We were all super nervous and had 15minute interviews and were told we would find out at the end of the day. That was the longest 25 minutes of my life as I had one of the later interviews. Before I knew it we were all waiting in the TLC2 to know our fate.

We were taken in in little groups. I couldn’t help but start crying, thinking that I might not get to have the experience all over again. My friends were waiting for me to find out the news. Sam gave me her tissues to mop my face. Then my name was called. Bezza, Wilko, Miss Dagwell and Clezzer were all in there. We all waited and Miss Dagwell said, “You’re going back!” I have never been so happy in my life! I hugged all my friends and I grabbed Zoe and jumped up and down with her.

However 5 students did not make the 2012 trip and I am very sorry for them, but I know they will continue to help, and I’m so proud of all the work they have done, so thank you to those 5.

I’m going to leave you now. Soon people will use the site more to talk about fundraising etc

Thank you for making this day amazing!
